Windows Server Licensing is pretty straightforward when deciding on your requirements. Once you have your virtual server or physical server ready and require an operating system license you need to decide on the variant to see if it is suitable for your needs. Whether you require 2008/2012/2016/2019 and one of its many variants (R2/Datacenter / Essentials / Standard ) etc You will need the Operating System License initially to get your server going.

Once you have your Windows Server License installed; you have equipped your Windows Server with a Windows Server License you then need Client Access Licenses (CALS for short) to allow users or devices to be able to connect to that server. So therefor every user (or device) needs a license to connect to the server. You must purchase a CAL for EVERY user or device that connects or accesses the Windows Server Operating System.

Here is where it gets confusing.

Do you license the USER's, DEVICE's? How, what, how do you know the CAL's you need? This is where it gets confusing.

There are three different types of CAL's: User CAL's, Device CAL's and Remote Desktop Service (RDS) CAL's.

USER CAL's - Organisations purchase USER CAL's for each person who accesses the server to use its services irregardless of the number of devices they use for that access. Thius is particalrly useful if you have multiple devices per person in your business so that only one CAL is needed to roam your corporate network.

DEVICE CAL's - Organisations purchase DEVICE CAL's for every device that accesses the server irregardless of the number of people in that organisation. This is particarly useful if you have part time staff or shift workers who need access to the server.

Remote Desktop Services CAL's (previously Terminal Services CAL's) must be purchased to combine the Windows Server Operating System and the Remote Desktop Service Components. These are for business's where the users need to access programs on the desktop remotely. Therefor if you use remote desktop services you will need BOTH a Windows USER or DEVICE CAL as well as a RDS USER or DEVICE CAL for EACH user or device

Microsoft Exchange Server is a popular Email / mail server and calendaring server. It runs exclusively on Windows Server operating systems and is designed by Microsoft.

Microsoft SharePoint License is a webbased collaborative platform tool that integrates with Microsoft Office. Microsoft SharePoint is as a highly configurable document management and storage system tool designed by Microsoft and used by many organisations globally.

Microsoft SQL Server is a relational database management system which controls data storage, processing and security. It includes an engine that processes commands and queries combined with a storage engine that manages database files, tables, pages, indexes, data buffers and transactions. SQL Server is a software product which primarily stores and retrieves data requested by other software applications wither locally on the same pc or across a network.
